When you’re starving in the woods, food is worth more than gold. As Mahatma Gandhi said, “It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver.” After all, what’s the point of hustling and grinding all day if you can’t live to enjoy the fruits of your hard work? Physical and mental health are rewarding not only for the immediate impact they have on your mood, energy, and well-being, but also because they allow you to become more productive, confident, and goal-oriented. If you want to become the best version of yourself, follow these three keys to unlocking your health potential.
1. Keep a Healthy Body Wealth begins with health and health begins in the body. We’ve all heard the saying “you are what you eat,” but in a sense it’s the literal truth. The food you eat provides the nutrients that create your cellular structure from your skin and hair to your muscles, bones, and organs. Maintaining a proper diet is the first and most essential component to your health. Ignore all the flashy fad diets and stick with what’s simple: eat good food, eat when you’re hungry, and stop when you’re full. Listen to your body, know your dietary limitations, and include foods in your diet like apples, avocados, blueberries, kale, eggs, nuts, and fish. There are tons of healthy and delicious foods to explore so find the ones you love to eat and eat more of them! When your body is nourished properly, the next most vital component to your health is your sleep schedule. While we can’t always control what time we have to wake up, we can work to regulate our sleep-wake cycles or “circadian rhythm” to naturally boost our levels of melatonin. Getting at least 8 hours of sleep is recommended by almost every physician, but another essential component to a healthy sleep schedule is going to bed when it’s dark. Darkness sends signals to our brain to produce melatonin which makes it easier to fall asleep. However, blue light from our phones restrains the production of melatonin and makes it more difficult to fall asleep and stay awake during the day. The solution is simple: when it’s time to bed, turn off your phone! It’ll be there when you wake up. Instead, enjoy the inside of your eyelids.
Finally, maintain your health through personal hygiene. Maintaining hygiene reduces the spread of illness and risk of medical conditions. Not only that, it makes people like you more. Nobody wants a dirty ass friend no matter how cool they are. Wash your hands frequently and, when you’re not near a sink, use The Rich Barber Disinfecting Hand Sanitizer to kill 99.9% of germs while keeping your hands nourished with Vitamin E and Omega-6 fatty acids. Remember to shower (every other day) and wash and condition your hair with The Rich Barber Pro Rich Set: Shampoo & Conditioner Set to give your hair and scalp the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients they need to promote new hair growth, maintain proper hydration, and create strength and luster. Give your beard the same attention as your hair with The Rich Barber Pro Rich Beard Oil.
2. Keep a Healthy Mind Health isn’t just what you feed your body, but also what you feed your mind. Today, we’re constantly inundated with media, entertainment, and stimulation. As we endlessly scroll and try to keep up appearances on social media, our mental health suffers. Studies show that frequent social media use can lead to anxiety, depression, and even physical ailments. The apps we use become addictive because they give us a hit of dopamine every time we get a like or hear a notification. The trick is to rewire your brain to seek that dopamine elsewhere. Sleep and exercise are the most powerful ways to increase dopamine levels naturally, but other activities like listening to music and meditation also work to increase dopamine. The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health have been far reaching. From August 2020 - February 2021, the percentage of adults experiencing anxiety and depression rose from 36.4% to 41.5%. It’s imperative that we maintain mental health through easy, free, and natural practices like meditation, exercise, and social interaction. Stop scrolling and start strolling!
3. Keep a Healthy Routine Eating well, sleeping well, and getting off your phone are all vital to your health, but as I mentioned earlier, exercise is key to staving off mental illness. Keep a healthy routine by exercising for at least 30 minutes each day. Exercises improves your mood, sleep, and reduces your risk of cardiovascular disease and certain cancers.
Another key to a healthy routine is journaling. I start each morning by writing down both my short term and long term goals and three things I’m thankful for. Journaling allows you to prioritize your thoughts and keep things in perspective. Plus, it helps keep you organized and on-track. Journaling helped me organize my thoughts and pick out my best pieces of advice when writing my book, The Rich Barber Method. My 10+ years as a professional barber have provided me with tons of learning experiences and tips for young entrepreneurs which I was able to compile into one succinct volume that can teach you how to master your craft, self-promote, and forge professional relationships. I think the most important part of maintaining a healthy routine is through maintaining a healthy relationship with your friends and family. No one makes it on their own, and what fun would it be making it if you didn’t have friends to share your success with? Of course, each family is unique and oftentimes family dynamics can be unhealthy, but whenever possible, reach out to your loved ones and tell them that you love them. Call your mom, be cheerful during the holidays, and cherish every moment you have with them. With friendships, make sure that you recognize if a relationship is toxic or hindering, offer support when needed, and ask for support when you need it. Health isn’t something we achieve on our own, it’s something we strive for together. When each of us has a healthy mind, body, and routine, we have a healthy world.Related Articles
